Work-Life Balance for Women

By Jennifer Curran on March 5, 2025

A work-life balance can be difficult in today’s world, especially for women.  With the many responsibilities and expectations that women face, achieving equilibrium between work and personal life can be overwhelming.  Work-life balance is about finding the right mix that allows women to excel in their professional life while also maintaining a fulfilling personal life.

Achieving a work-life balance involves allotting time and energy appropriately between work, family, friends and personal interests.  It means finding a rhythm where you can succeed at work and meet your professional obligations while also enjoying a fulfilling personal life.  Finding the right strategy will vary for every woman, but here are a handful of ways to start your journey to work-life harmony.

Set Boundaries – Create clear distinctions between your work life and your personal life by setting specific work hours and avoid taking work home.  Turn off your work phone and don’t check your email when not working.  Know what personal commitments are non-negotiable and don’t miss out on those events or opportunities.

Set Realistic Expectations – Women often set high expectations for themselves that lead to increased pressure and stress.  Set expectations that are manageable and don’t lead to being overwhelmed.  Look at your workload and schedule.  Prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines.  Let go of the need for perfection and focus on progress instead.

Learn to Say No – Learning to say no can be difficult, especially if you are being asked by someone you care about or something that can benefit you professionally.  However, you can’t do it all.  Being overcommitted leads to feeling overwhelmed. Before committing, evaluate your schedule, workload and personal needs.  If it interferes with your schedule or causes stress, say no.  Remember that saying no does not make you selfish.

Make Time for Yourself & Your Interests – Prioritizing self-care as a woman when balancing life and work stressors is important for mental, emotional and physical well-being.  Make time for the activities and hobbies you enjoy.  Prioritize your time with what helps you relax and recharge.  Take vacations that can help you disconnect from work.  Connect with family and friends that make you feel supported.  Be kind to yourself.

Finding the right work-life balance can improve women’s physical and mental health, increase productivity, reduce stress and improve relationships.  Achieving a healthy work-life balance will help you to live a more fulfilled life.  Maintaining this balance is well worth the effort.
